From Busy to Effective with One Question

We are caught in everyday to-do lists.
Some days feel like a golden cage.

There are just enough urgent tasks on the list that you don’t immediately quit.

I have also tried many fancy, long to-do lists.
And the day had just started —
and I was already chasing after it.

I was running behind on every task.

As soon as I deliver & finish my first activity on time.
I already ran behind the rest.

Even all the productivity hacks can’t help you.
They are all good and well until something changes your wild set-up.

The train is delayed.
No matter how efficient you are, once you lost time somewhere, you can’t catch back up.

Studying Forestry has definitely helped me with my long term thinking.

I had to zoom out of the moment.

We had to make decisions which tree to cut down and which to keep.

The Question became as following: Which one Tree do I need to support today
so that it can keep growing better for the next 10 years
without needing more help?

That was the simple question that I had to answer for each tree. The ones that needed to be cut down – where the ones with less chance of growing well and were in the way of a more healthy tree.

I started noticing that not every problem that exists today is actually going to be there tomorrow.

The author of The One Thing has summarized this into one powerful question:

What one thing can I do today that would make all my other problems go away?

Now my to-do list started to shrink.

The better I got with asking this question,
the faster I got to narrow down my next one thing to work on.

This question is now the replacement of my to-do list.

I focus on this one thing and get it done.

This has not made me efficient,
but effective.

I work until I’m done.
The work is more difficult —
but effective.

Done beats Perfect How often have you waited before publishing something? Maybe you have never published anything yet because you thought it’s not good enough. It’s not perfect. I have seen so many people get stuck on the path to building their business. They all get stuck in the Perfection Trap. They think it has to be a masterpiece before anybody else can see it. When in the beginning nobody will see it anyway. Not many people will ever see anything you publish. The few that do – will not…

  • Commitment is Elimination of Options

Hey Reader, Commitment is often talked about mostly as a sense of committing to more. Taking on a new commitment or getting more committed. Yet commitment means:to eliminate alternatives. I know that most think of commitment as adding something new to your life.I thought that way for years. Then I ended up with too many commitments—too many plates that I wasn’t able to actually do. I started to feel burned out. That’s when I noticed how flawed my understanding of commitment was. Commitment is…

This is what I was told that I want. That’s what people were talking about on YouTube. All those fun benefits from running my business. I really wanted those things: Working 4 hours per week. Having the perks of passive income. Travelling the world. Yet, none of it happened. I was working hard on what should be…

  • Goal or Journey? Both!

Hey Reader, When I was in university, there was a big debate: Whether life was about the goal to achieve or enjoying living the journey. As a success-driven person, I always stated that the goal and the outcome matter most. Now that I hunted success for many years, I’ve noticed another pattern. If you don’t enjoy the process to get the success—success is falling short. You need to have goals because they serve as landmarks to give your journey a direction. That is something I have seen in…

  • Broken Families break Society

Broken Families break Society Broken families lead to broken societies, distant communities, and empty neighborhoods. My brother and I puzzled a lot. We had one puzzle where, in the end, one piece was missing. We puzzled many landscapes to hang them up as pictures on the wall. Once you found the missing piece, no matter how often you looked at the picture, you always noticed this missing piece. There was an empty space. When I think of broken families, I think of this incomplete puzzle. It…
